Expert Guide to Hassness Country House: A Walking Holiday in the Lake District

We asked Andrew, a tour leader and guide at Ramble Worldwide who specialises in walking holidays at Hassness Country House, in the Lake District, to tell us why he loves this part of the UK and walking in the Lake District. He has led with Ramble Worldwide for two years and completed over 30 walking tours, mainly in Yorkshire and the north of England and, of course, the Lake District. Hassness House is a personal highlight for him, and he was happy to share his experiences, advice and recommendations for places to visit when travelling to the Lake District.

The house is the perfect size for groups which allows walkers the opportunity to spend time with fellow travellers and share experiences and tips. The house is located in a beautiful spot on the Lake in Buttermere, where you can witness the picturesque surroundings and embark on a wide range of wonderful walks. There is also accessible public transport nearby so there is no need to move the car.

The Lake District is a personal favourite for many reasons, but the main reason is the location’s natural beauty. I have selected three of my favourite local spots to visit when visiting the Lake District and recommend anyone to make sure they add them to their itinerary;

Buttermere:

A charming village that, despite its small size, boasts two inns and two cafes offering a range of treats, including delectable ice cream. It’s the perfect stop after a day of exploring. 

Haystacks and Innominate Tarn:

These iconic locations are linked to the legendary Alfred Wainwright, making them a must-visit for anyone looking to "bag" a few Wainwrights during their stay. 

Keswick’s Walking Shops:

Keswick is home to an array of outdoor shops where you can find everything you need, especially handy on a rainy day.

The best thing about the walking holidays at Hassness House is that there is a range of walks to enjoy offering different levels of challenge depending on ability - and weather! This is where us leaders come in to optimise the whole walking experience for you.

Leading on from the weather… the best piece of advice is to prepare for all types of weather. Pack waterproofs, warm clothing and walking gear that has been worn in and reliable- nothing worse than having difficulty with your walking boots when there is stunning surroundings to enjoy and take in.
