Overview
The Aosta Valley invites you into one of the most spectacular corners of the Italian Alps, where ancient peaks and pristine wilderness create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. This is a region shaped by the giants of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, which tower above the valley, their snow-capped summits forming a dramatic backdrop to every walk, viewpoint and village you encounter.
Your base is a hotel that has been family-owned since the late 1800s. Courmayeur is a charming Alpine town where cobbled streets, wooden chalets and cosy cafés set the tone for days filled with exploration. From here, you'll venture into the western Aosta Valley and its wonderfully remote neighbouring areas, discovering trails that weave through larch forests, past turquoise glacial lakes and beneath cliffs carved by millennia of ice. Each walk reveals a new facet of the Alps. The silence of high mountain meadows, the sparkle of ancient glaciers, and the sweeping panoramas that seem to stretch endlessly across the horizon.
One of the highlights is the ascent on the Monte Bianco Skyway, an engineering marvel that lifts you effortlessly into the high Alpine world. Your first stop is Pavillon du Mont Fréty at 2,000 metres (6,560 feet), where you pause for a delicious three‑course Alpine buffet lunch. Surrounded by towering peaks and crisp mountain air, it’s a moment that captures the essence of the region — wild, serene and breathtakingly beautiful.
The journey continues to Punta Helbronner, at nearly 3,500 metres (11,500 feet), the highest accessible point in Italy. Here, the views are nothing short of extraordinary: a 360‑degree panorama of jagged summits, deep glacial valleys and the immense presence of Mont Blanc itself. It’s a place that leaves you humbled, exhilarated and deeply connected to the raw beauty of the Alps.

This captivating walk explores one of the most dramatic glacial landscapes in the Aosta Valley, set beneath the towering southern flanks of Mont Blanc. The trail begins at La Visaille, where we set off directly from the bus stop, following the gently rising Path 18A towards the Cabanne du Combal mountain restaurant. Much of the route is well-made and paved, accompanied by the fresh Alpine air and the constant sound of flowing water from the Dora di Veny river.Between the Cabanne du Combal and Lac du Miage, there is a good chance of spotting ibex, often seen poised elegantly against the rugged mountain backdrop. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the trail reveals one of the Alps’ most remarkable natural features: the Miage Glacier. At over 10 kilometres long, it is Italy’s longest glacier and the largest debris-covered glacier in Europe. The path leads to the striking, heart-shaped Lac du Miage, formed at the glacier’s snout and enclosed by its moraine. Here, it is sometimes possible to watch blocks of ice calving into the lake—an unforgettable demonstration of the glacier’s slow but powerful movement.Along the route, we also pass the remains of 18th-century military fortifications, a reminder of historic French incursions over the Col de la Seigne, adding a fascinating human dimension to the landscape. Quiet moments beside the lake offer time to reflect on a place shaped by ice, stone, and time, where fluctuating water levels ensure the scenery is never quite the same from one season to the next

On calm days, the Matterhorn reflects perfectly on its surface, creating one of the most iconic mirror-images in the Alps.Walking along the lake’s western shore, you move through a world of rock, wind, and sky. You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.
It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.
The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses, mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.
Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.
If you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.
If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you are unable to demonstrate that you are insured.
If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland, please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.
EHIC & GHIC Cards
Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.
It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
